Summary

We used a new method for determining the volume of the open pore channels by evapotaring the liquid from them to study of the pore space оf the lava-like fuel-containing materials (LFCM) of the "Shelter" object. The pore space of the LFCM consists of large gas pores (significantly bigger than 10 microns), small gas pores (~10 microns), cracks (with thickness of 2 - 2.5 microns), and nanosized pore channels (diameter 40 - 60 nm). Nanosized pore chan-nels, and possibly cracks, interconnect the gas pores into a continuous structure of open channels. Gas pores were formed because of the lowering of the solubility of gases in a silicate glass matrix when the temperature dropped in the final phase of the accident of the 4-th block of Chernobyl NPP. The formation of the cracks was apparently caused by the increase of the volume of the crystalline inclusions of uranium oxide and the rapid cooling of the surface layers of the LFCM. The nanosized pore channels are the result of the accumulation of the radiation defects during self-irradiation of LFCM, at the expense of -decay of transuranium elements.
